For example if someone prefers the column display or indoor graphs to be on by default.

Actually this seems not so easy. When user deselects the defaulted checkbox, it disappears as a parameter. So the new request looks no different than original and the default turns it back on. So there is no way to uncheck a defaulted checkbox. Would need to maintain state in hidden variables or cookies or something. Probably not worth the trouble.
