Complexity Reduction Progress for operations.rs

Goal

Reduce cyclomatic complexity of src/core/operations.rs from 204 to under 50 (Grade A).

Phase 1: Tag Conversion Extraction (Completed)

  • Date: Previous session
  • Extracted Module: src/core/tag_conversion.rs (443 lines)
  • Lines Removed: 642 lines (2054 → 1412)
  • Complexity Reduction: 90 points (204 → 114)
  • Functions Extracted:
    • raw_bytes_to_tag_value() - Main conversion function
    • decode_rational_*() - Rational number decoding
    • decode_signed_rational_*() - Signed rational decoding
    • decode_ascii_string() - ASCII string decoding
    • Various helper functions for tag-specific conversions
  • Test Status: ✅ All 1163 tests passing

Phase 2: Format Dispatch Extraction (Completed)

  • Date: Previous session
  • Extracted Module: src/core/format_dispatch.rs (172 lines)
  • Lines Removed: 173 lines (1412 → 1239)
  • Complexity Reduction: 4 points (114 → 110)
  • Grade Improvement: C (69) → B (71)
  • Key Change: Extracted large match statement with 40+ format parser arms
  • Functions Extracted:
    • dispatch_format_parser() - Main dispatch function
    • convert_string_error() - Error conversion helper
  • Visibility Changes: Made 3 parsers pub(crate) for dispatch module access
  • Test Status: ✅ All 1163 tests passing

Phase 3: TIFF Helpers Extraction (Completed)

  • Date: 2025-11-20
  • Extracted Module: src/core/tiff_helpers.rs (267 lines)
  • Lines Removed: 283 lines (1239 → 954)
  • Complexity Reduction: TBD (awaiting Codacy analysis)
  • Functions Extracted:
    • parse_ifd_chain() - IFD chain traversal (public)
    • get_ifd_name() - IFD naming helper (private)
    • process_tiff_ifd_tags() - Tag processing and sub-IFD identification (private)
    • parse_exif_subifd() - EXIF sub-IFD parsing (public)
    • parse_gps_subifd() - GPS sub-IFD parsing (public)
    • parse_makernote_if_canon() - Canon MakerNote parsing (private)
  • Additional Changes:
    • Removed 16 lines of orphaned documentation
    • Removed unused imports (canon makernotes, HashMap)
    • Fixed visibility issues for JPEG section access
  • Test Status: ✅ All 1167 tests passing (4 new tests appeared)

Phase 4: JPEG Helpers Extraction (Completed)

  • Extracted Modules:
    • src/core/jpeg_helpers.rs (298 lines)
    • src/parsers/tiff/tiff_subreader.rs (100 lines)
  • Lines Removed: 315 lines (954 → 639)
  • Complexity Reduction: TBD (awaiting Codacy analysis)
  • Functions Extracted to jpeg_helpers:
    • process_jfif_segments() - JFIF APP0 segment processing (public)
    • process_exif_segments() - EXIF APP1 segment processing (public)
    • process_ifd0_tags() - IFD0 tag extraction (private)
    • process_xmp_segments() - XMP metadata extraction (public)
    • process_iptc_segments() - IPTC metadata extraction (public)
    • process_icc_segments() - ICC profile extraction (public)
  • Shared Module Created:
    • TiffSubReader struct - FileReader wrapper for embedded TIFF data
    • Used by both operations.rs and jpeg_helpers.rs
    • Includes comprehensive unit tests
  • Additional Changes:
    • Removed JPEG helper function definitions (285 lines)
    • Removed TiffSubReader definition from operations.rs (30 lines)
    • Added imports from jpeg_helpers module
    • Cleaned up unused imports
  • Phase Reduction: 33% (954 → 639 lines)
  • Total Reduction: 69% (2054 → 639 lines)
  • Test Status: ✅ All 1169 tests passing (2 new tests in TiffSubReader)
  • Commit: 6dd62548

Phase 5: Makernote Refactoring (Completed)

  • Date: 2025-11-24
  • Scope: src/parsers/tiff/makernotes/
  • Key Improvements:
    • Unified Lens Database: Consolidated 12 disparate lens databases into lens_data.rs with static array lookups (zero allocation).
    • Shared IFD Parser: Created ifd_parser_base.rs to centralize IFD iteration logic, removing ~300 lines of duplicate code across parsers.
    • Unified Value Extraction: Created value_extractors.rs to standardize how integers and strings are read from IFD entries.
    • Refactored Parsers: Updated canon.rs, nikon.rs, and apple.rs to use the new shared infrastructure.
  • Complexity Impact: significantly reduced duplication and maintenance burden in the makernotes directory.
  • Test Status: ✅ All tests passing (including 560+ lens database tests).

Overall Progress Summary

Lines Removed by Phase

  • Phase 1: 642 lines removed
  • Phase 2: 173 lines removed
  • Phase 3: 283 lines removed
  • Phase 4: 315 lines removed
  • Total: 1,413 lines removed (69% reduction)

Current State

  • Original: 2054 lines, complexity 204, grade C (67)
  • Current: 639 lines, complexity TBD, grade TBD
  • Target: ~400 lines, complexity <50, grade A (>90)
  • Progress: 69% of lines removed, on track to exceed target!

  1. src/core/tag_conversion.rs - 443 lines (tag value conversion logic)
  2. src/core/format_dispatch.rs - 172 lines (format parser dispatch)
  3. src/core/tiff_helpers.rs - 267 lines (TIFF parsing helpers)
  4. src/core/jpeg_helpers.rs - 298 lines (JPEG metadata processing)
  5. src/parsers/tiff/tiff_subreader.rs - 100 lines (shared TIFF sub-reader)
  6. src/core/operations.rs - 639 lines (main operations)
  7. src/parsers/tiff/makernotes/shared/ifd_parser_base.rs - Shared IFD parser logic
  8. src/parsers/tiff/makernotes/shared/value_extractors.rs - Shared value extraction logic
  9. src/parsers/tiff/makernotes/lens_data.rs - Unified lens database

Analysis

Architectural Improvements

  • Single Responsibility: Each module now has a focused, clear purpose
  • Reduced Coupling: Helper functions moved to dedicated modules
  • Better Testability: TiffSubReader now has its own comprehensive test suite
  • Improved Maintainability: 69% reduction in main file size makes code easier to understand
  • Zero Functionality Changes: All refactoring was structural only, no behavior changes

Remaining Content in operations.rs (639 lines)

After 4 phases of extraction, operations.rs contains:

  • Public API functions (4 functions):
    • read_metadata() - Main entry point for reading metadata
    • write_metadata() - Write metadata back to file
    • modify_tag() - Modify a specific tag value
    • copy_metadata() - Copy metadata between files
  • Format-specific parsers (3 functions):
    • parse_jpeg_metadata() - JPEG parser coordination
    • parse_tiff_metadata() - TIFF parser coordination
    • parse_casio_cam_metadata() - Casio CAM format parser
  • Test utilities (~90 lines):
    • TestReader implementation
    • Test cases for TiffSubReader integration

Complexity Expectations

With 69% line reduction and extraction of:

  • Tag conversion logic (90 complexity points in Phase 1)
  • Format dispatch (match statement with 40+ arms in Phase 2)
  • TIFF helpers (nested loops and conditionals in Phase 3)
  • JPEG helpers (6 processing functions with conditionals in Phase 4)

We expect significant complexity reduction, likely achieving the <50 target.

Next Steps

Awaiting Codacy Analysis

  • Push commits to trigger Codacy scan (attempted, SSH auth failed)
  • Once metrics available, verify complexity <50
  • If target achieved: Complete! 🎉
  • If still >50: Consider further extraction of helper functions

If Target Achieved

  • ✅ Refactoring complete!
  • Update this document with final metrics
  • Celebrate achieving Grade A complexity!

Notes

  • Each phase maintains 100% test passing rate
  • All extractions follow single responsibility principle
  • Public/private visibility carefully managed for API boundaries
  • No functionality changes, only structural improvements
  • Module count increased from 1 to 9 focused modules
