🌙 Feature Spotlight: Generative Dreaming & Offline Sleep Consolidation
We are excited to spotlight one of Spector's most profound neurocomputational features: Generative Dreaming and Offline Sleep Consolidation.
💤 Why Do Artificial Minds Need to Dream?
In biological systems, episodic memories encoded during waking hours undergo Active Systems Consolidation during slow-wave and REM sleep. As proposed by neuroscientist Erik Hoel in The Overfitted Brain Hypothesis, dreaming injects structured stochastic noise into memory representations to prevent overfitting to idiosyncratic daily interactions.
Traditional static vector databases suffer from "memory overfitting"—retrieving literal conversational quotes rather than generalized semantic wisdom.
🔬 How Spector Implements Generative Dreaming
Spector introduces a dedicated offline sleep consolidation engine implementing the
dream,simulate, andcommit_simulationrecall algebra operators:1. Sharp-Wave Ripple (SWR) Replay
During idle or scheduled sleep phases, Spector triggers high-frequency replay sweeps across recent episodic logs, identifying clusters of high emotional valence, unresolved tasks (Zeigarnik open loops), and high prediction error (novelty z-scores).
2. Holonomic Stochastic Recombination
Replayed memory traces are passed through a 12-stage generative recombination pipeline that explores anti-centroid associative links and counterfactual scenarios ("What if the user had rejected the proposed migration?").
3. Cognitive Source Monitoring & Provenance (NF7)
To prevent confabulation and memory hallucination:
source = simulated.recalloperations hard-gate and omit simulated traces (allow_simulated = false).commit_simulationcan verified hypotheses be promoted todistilledsemantic facts, maintaining an unbroken provenance DAG to the source episodes.4. Memory Compaction & Hebbian Potentiation
Dreaming sweeps strengthen associative graph edges (Hebbian co-activation) and execute non-destructive storage strength updates ($S$ ) across the memory web.
🛠️ API & MCP Integration
Inspect or trigger dreaming through Spector's MCP interface:
simulate: Execute an online counterfactual probe without mutating state.introspect: Inspect offline dream schedules, tier populations, and source counts.Check out our technical deep dive on the Spectrayan Blog!
