GTAO is near/far and fov dependent

Can't make it work on small FOVs

How small? It relies on reconstructPositionFromDepth(uv, readDepth(uDepthTexture, uv, uNear, uFar)); so you might run into precision issues.

Did some tests and it's actually working so it's not a FOV issue. Must have been something else.

Is our FOV clamped at 8 deg btw? I'm setting it to 60 deg .. 1 deg upon creation.
