Additional steps

XCode

Accept license:

sudo xcodebuild -license

Code folders and git setup

  • Create the ~/code/personal folder
  • Create the ~/code/<company> folder
  • Update git/gitconfig_work.symlink with the work email
  • Update git/gitconfig.symlink accordingly

Rectangle

  • Enable rectangle and grant auth
  • Re-run the script to set shortcuts

Keyboard - Modifier keys

Remap Caps Lock to Ctrl.

Dark Mode

Enable the darkmode in the general settings.

Enable Night Shift

Enable Night Shift (either by localtion or custom schedule) to shift the colors of the display to warmer tone.

Useful folder links

  • Add Downloads folder to the dock
  • Add user folder to the favourite in Finder

Notifications

Enable notifications for Slack, Zoom, etc.

Replace Siri in the control strip (touchbar)

Replace Siri with a more useful item: go to the keyboard setting and search for the "Customize Control Strip" button.

Disk Encryption

Turn on FileVault:

fdesetup status

If it is not turned on, enable:

sudo fdesetup enable

Neovim URL handler

Custom URL handler for Neovim that allows you to open files in Neovim directly from URLs, such as nvim://file//path/to/file:line?tmux-session=session_name.

How it works

It is really specific to my workflow: tmux, neovim started in Alacritty and listening to a socket named as the tmux session in the /tmp folder.

  • It first tries to see if there is an existing tmux session with that name
  • If so, it checks if there is any nvim socket open at /tmp/nvim-<tmux_session_name>
  • Eventually, it opens the file at the specified line in the existing nvim instance
  • If any of the previous condition is not matched, it tries to open the file in a new Alacritty session.

How to install

Copy the NvimURLHandler.app in ~/Applications and run it once to register the URL handler. It shuold out of the box 🤞, you can try it by opening a link like: "nvim://file//Users/nicolognudi/dotfiles/README.md:10?tmux-session=dotfiles". If it does not work enable the logging in the bash script.

Troubleshooting Guide

XCode Command Line Tools

If not prompted when using git for the first time, manually install the XCode Command Line Tools:

xcode-select --install

iTerm

If the preferences aren't picked up automatically: point Load preferences from custom folder or URL to ~/dotfiles/iterm2

If the settings are not applied, run:

defaults read com.googlecode.iterm2

SSH

To manually add keys to the macOS ssh-agent:

ssh-add -K ~/.ssh/id_ed25519

The ssh-agent can then automatically load the key from the macOS keychain every time it needs it.

Git Submodules

Update all submodules to the latest tips of their remote branches:

git submodule update --recursive --remote

Compinit insecure directories

If you receive a warning message by ZSH's completion system compinit when starting a new session, like:

zsh compinit: insecure directories, run compaudit for list.
Ignore insecure directories and continue [y] or abort compinit [n]?

You can list the insecure directories with this command:

compaudit
There are insecure directories:
/usr/local/share/zsh/site-functions
/usr/local/share/zsh

You can change the owner and group of these directories by running these 2 commands:

compaudit | xargs chown -R "$(whoami)"
compaudit | xargs chmod go-w
