this is already easily doable by copying the default statusbar code and adding the vis.win.syntax string into the right_parts table

I think that could be reasonable. Personally I would also like to see the default status bar moved entirely into C code where we can just read the values we need directly without going through layers of library code. Considering that code is run on every key press it would be better if it wasn't so wasteful.

I suppose in comparison, it is more wasteful than C code but from the options I've seen, C status bars are not dynamic and if they allow for it then you get dwm which is just a pipe (its usually shellscript and about the most wasteful thing you can do) or you end up with tmux, which implements its own scripting language mixture (a giant mess) and you still have to execute shellscript anyway. i3status is cleaner but ehh now I need a cronjob to create a file so path_exists picks it up and formats the bar correctly. just a PITA.

Using any scripting language for a status bar is a better choice than that IMO. the code in question is just

table.insert(left_parts, win.file.syntax or "NOSYNTAX") -- or maybe right_parts?

Oh I wasn't suggesting we remove the option to set the status bar from lua, only that the existing code just be commented and left as an example. Then for the majority of users who are using the default configuration they get a more efficient version implemented in C. Note we already have code for doing this when vis is compiled without support for lua. I would like to see that tidied up and become the default case regardless of whether lua is enabled or not.

For the record I don't find any issue writing robust, scriptable, C interfaces. But I may be a bit biased having written entire graphical applications in C using only a 3D graphics API to draw things.
