The next version of OpenBoard, 1.8.0, will come with many new features. It is currently under development and is expected to be released by the end of 2026.
My experimental builds are now based on the development of this version. Some of the new features include:
- The document format will change to improve performance, especially on network drives. See Introducing an updated document format for background information and discussions.
- OpenBoard now supports dark themes and adapts accordingly.
- Support for Wayland on Linux has improved significantly, though it is not yet perfect. It should now work quite nicely with Gnome and KDE Plasma, at least.
- The color palette is now easier to configure and can contain up to ten colors.
- There are now many more board background patterns available. You can also define custom background patterns consisting of repeated lines.
The source code of OpenBoard now requires at least Qt 6.5. Some older distro versions are therefore no longer supported by the experimental builds. Currently I provide packages for
