Can not find .env.local

I am trying to get it running locally so I'm looking for .env.local to add the api keys but I can't seem to find it.
Does it just work by adding the keys to .env.example or am I missing something here? contributing.md seems out of date and time for an update.

If so please let me update the contributing.md as I would love for that to be my first pull request.
