formatting support

the specification doesn't even seem to support rudimentary formatting (e.g. latex style), for example accents on European names and institutions. Or does it support that and the documentation just doesn't mention it? Can an example be added?

Not sure I understand your issue, though XML does, to my knowledge, support the full set of UTF-8 characters ...

many fields say "roman characters only". Plus e.g. some collaboration names have formatting like small caps or sub/superscripts.

hmm ... I'd consider "roman characters" as not well defined, as the roman languages do contain non-ascii (accented) characters, so limiting to this won't make sense in my view.

If the collaboration name can't be (correctly) expressed with UTF-8, I guess it would be better to have an (optional) image/"logo" in addition to the machine-readable name (in ascii or uff-8) ?
