My project (https://github.com/1fpga/golem, though I'm on a dev branch right now) takes seconds to load about 120kb of JavaScript (rolled up and minified).

I captured a profile of the startup code (up to user interaction then exiting the process). The chrome-profiler.json file can be found here: https://public.1fpga.cloud/hans/boa-issue-2975/chrome_profiler.json.gz

Considering the latest news from yt-dlp/yt-dlp#14404, I wanted to test the real Rust option 😉 and see how it fares. I'm aware of your refreshingly honest benchmarks, so I wasn't expecting super good numbers, but still..

So I ran it with the bundle from here:

and it took 5+ minutes instead of 8XX ms with node.

It also stops at:

I tested with a --profile bench build (3bf25a6). I may comeback with profile info if needed, although it should be very easy to replicate. Apparently, quickjs (without some string optimization) was even slower. So it seems like an interesting test case.

5 minutes? I'd be curious to see what a flame graph would look like with that load. It could be very useful information.

Well, that was fun*.

~88% of the time is actually consumed by boa_string::JsString::concat_array() which calls core::ptr::copy_nonoverlapping().

So, the talk at bellard/quickjs#445 about "rope" string optimization being very relevant in this case appears to be on point.

I saw this error while perf report was loading.

addr2line <some_path>: could not read first record

Searching for it, I found this single issue which mentions an undocumented perf-config option. So I grabbed the kernel sources to find what that option was, and found core.addr2line-timeout. That's a value in ms set to 10 by default. So doing this fixed the issue:

perf config core.addr2line-timeout=10000

This sets the timeout to 10s which should be more than enough for everyone (hopefully).

I wonder why Boa is so slow, this is the biggest blocking factor for Den to transition to Boa, because rquickjs kept breaking stuff...
