Saving ggplot object as rtf

I am trying to save a figure generated by R in rtf format, can you please clarify whether it must be first saved as png?
Is it possible to save a ggplot object directly in rtf format?

Yes, the figure needs to be saved as PNG first. RTF, as a document format, can only encode and include images in specific formats: https://merck.github.io/r2rtf/articles/example-figure.html

That said, if you need to do this repetitively, it won't be difficult to create a wrapper function and automate everything from ggsave() to write_rtf() so you don't need to worry about all the details in the middle.
