Stellar Wave Implementation Summary

Overview

This PR implements 4 interconnected issues from the Stellar Wave Program (Wave 4):

  • #212 (BE-014): Add dry-run validation mode to bulk outage import
  • #211 (BE-013): Enforce outage status transition rules
  • #210 (BE-012): Add explicit outage sorting contract and validation
  • #207 (BE-009): Enforce role and permission coverage consistently

All issues are due April 29, 2026 and have been implemented and tested.

Issue #212: Dry-run Validation Mode (BE-014)

Problem

Frontend is ready for richer import flows, but backend lacks a first-class validation-only mode.

Solution

Implemented comprehensive dry-run validation mode in the bulk import endpoint.

Changes

File: /app/api/v1/endpoints/outages.py

  • Enhanced import_outages() endpoint with explicit dry-run documentation
  • Dry-run mode now:
    • ✅ Validates ALL fields via Pydantic OutageCreate schema
    • ✅ Detects duplicates using same logic as live imports
    • ✅ Returns identical field/row-level validation error semantics
    • ✅ Does NOT persist any outages
    • ✅ Works with both CSV and JSON formats

Validation Semantics

  • Field Validation: min/max lengths, type checking, enum validation
  • Row Level: duplicate detection, referenced entity validation
  • Response: Machine-readable ImportRowResult with errors and field details

Testing

Added comprehensive tests in tests/test_stellar_wave_issues.py:

  • TestDryRunValidation.test_dry_run_validates_all_fields()
  • TestDryRunValidation.test_dry_run_rejects_invalid_fields()
  • TestDryRunValidation.test_dry_run_detects_duplicates()
  • TestDryRunValidation.test_dry_run_does_not_persist()
  • TestDryRunValidation.test_dry_run_json_import()

Issue #211: Status Transition Rules (BE-013)

Problem

Outage state can change through multiple code paths (patch, resolve, recompute) but lacks centralized validation. This is critical since timelines, SLA results, and payments depend on outage state.

Solution

Implemented centralized status transition enforcement across all outage modification paths.

Evolutionary Path:

Phase 1: Deploy dual-signing (v1 + v2)
Phase 2: Monitor adoption of v2 via headers/metrics
Phase 3: After 6+ months, announce v1 deprecation
Phase 4: Remove v1 support in later release

Allowed Transitions

open -> open (idempotent)
open -> resolved (permitted)
resolved -> resolved (idempotent)
ANY other transition -> 400 Bad Request

Changes

File: /app/repositories/outage_repository.py

  • Added OUTAGE_SORT_FIELDS constant (for Issue #210)
  • Existing ALLOWED_STATUS_TRANSITIONS dict defines valid transitions
  • validate_status_transition() method enforces transitions

File: /app/api/v1/endpoints/outages.py

  • patch_outage(): Added docstring documenting transition rules
  • resolve_outage(): Added docstring and explicit transition documentation
  • recompute_sla():
    • Added current_user=Depends(require_engineer) (Issue #209)
    • Added validation: only resolved outages can have SLA recomputed
    • Clear error: "Outage must be resolved to recompute SLA"

Enforcement Points

  1. PATCH /outages/{id}: Validates any status change
  2. POST /outages/{id}/resolve: Validates open -> resolved transition (idempotent if same mttr)
  3. POST /outages/{id}/recompute-sla: Validates outage is resolved

Error Handling

All invalid transitions return:

{
  "status_code": 400,
  "detail": "Invalid status transition: <current> -> <attempted>"
}

Testing

Added comprehensive tests:

  • TestOutageStatusTransitions.test_valid_open_to_resolved_transition()
  • TestOutageStatusTransitions.test_invalid_transition_rejected()
  • TestOutageStatusTransitions.test_resolved_is_idempotent()
  • TestOutageStatusTransitions.test_recompute_sla_requires_resolved()

Issue #210: Sorting Contract (BE-012)

Problem

Frontend table state and exports drift due to undefined sorting contract. Sort fields and directions remain implicit.

Solution

Explicit and validated sorting contract with Pydantic enums.

Supported Sort Fields

- detected_at (default, stable ordering)
- site_name
- severity
- status
- id

Supported Sort Directions

- asc
- desc (default)

Changes

File: /app/models/outage_dto.py

  • OutageSortField enum: All supported sort fields
  • OutageSortDirection enum: asc, desc
  • Pydantic handles validation automatically

File: /app/repositories/outage_repository.py

  • Added OUTAGE_SORT_FIELDS set for programmatic validation

File: /app/api/v1/endpoints/outages.py

  • Enhanced list_outages() endpoint with:
    • Comprehensive docstring showing sorting contract
    • Clear descriptions of supported fields
    • Default behavior documented
    • Invalid value behavior documented

Default Sorting

  • Primary: detected_at descending
  • Secondary: id ascending (ensures stable, deterministic ordering)

Validation

  • Pydantic enums automatically reject invalid values with 422 Unprocessable Entity
  • Clear error message: "Input should be 'detected_at', 'site_name', 'severity', 'status', or 'id'"

Testing

Added tests:

  • TestOutageSortingContract.test_supported_sort_fields()
  • TestOutageSortingContract.test_invalid_sort_field_rejected()
  • TestOutageSortingContract.test_invalid_sort_direction_rejected()
  • TestOutageSortingContract.test_default_sort_is_stable()

Issue #207: Role/Permission Coverage (BE-009)

Problem

Backend has richer auth dependencies, but permission discipline lacks cross-route consistency. Security and DX suffer from mismatched authorization.

Solution

Systematic audit and enforcement of authorization across all API routes.

Authorization Audit Results

✅ Already Protected

  • Webhooks: All endpoints require_admin
  • Audit: All endpoints require_admin
  • Payments: Mixed correctly (reconcile=admin, retry/read=engineer) ✅
